Lamborghini supported teams gear up for 2020 Italian GT Championship title assaults on home soil

Lamborghini Squadra is set for the return to post-COVID-19 racing in Europe this weekend as the Italian GT Championship hosts the first round of the Endurance season at Mugello.

Italian GT comprises of two separate championships within the same season: there are eight rounds, four Endurance and four Sprint races. The Endurance element features one three-hour race per weekend while the Sprint Cup is made up out of two 50-minute races.

Two teams, Vincenzo Sospiri Racing and Imperiale Racing will fly the flag for Lamborghini in the leading GT championship in Italy, with each squad fielding an entry for the Endurance and Sprint elements.

Both teams competed in the championship last season, with Lamborghini stalwart Vito Postiglione finishing third in the Sprint and Endurance standings for Imperiale, who in turn won the GT3 Teams’ Cup.

As part of a contingency plan to avoid a new spread of COVID-19 this year, Imperiale Racing has elected to focus its attentions on domestic GT racing this season, which means that the Italian GT Endurance and Sprint campaigns will be prioritised.

Leading the team once again is Postiglione, who will be joined Lamborghini Factory Driver Giovanni Venturini for both Endurance and Sprint, while the pair will be partnered in the Endurance category by Postiglione’s 2019 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe team-mate Kikko Galbiati.

Another Lamborghini Squadra Corse supported team, VSR – led by former Formula 1 Grand Prix driver Vincenzo Sospiri – has recruited a wealth of youth and experience to launch an assault on both the Sprint and Endurance titles this season.

Last year’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe champion Danny Kroes will drive alongside the Super Trofeo World Finals winner Frederik Schandorff in the #63 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo. They will be joined by Finnish driver Tuomas Tujula.

Kroes will also drive the #63 car in the Sprint Cup but will have former single seater driver Leonardo Pulcini alongside.

Pulcini, who previously raced in GP3 and FIA Formula 3, is making his GT3 debut this season and will compete in the Endurance Cup with one of the stars of Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, teenager Steven Aghakhani in the #19 Huracán GT3 Evo.

They will be mentored by the head of the Lamborghini Youngsters Programme – in which Kroes, Schandorff, Galbiati and Aghakhani continue their path this year – Raffaele Giammaria.

In the Sprint element, Tujula will race alongside Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia regular, the Japanese Yuki Nemoto.

Following the opening Endurance round of the season this weekend, the Sprint Cup will commence on the first weekend of August.

Vincenzo Sospiri: I’m very pleased with our final line-up, we have a good mix of experienced drivers and youngsters and a great deal of talent in both cars. Testing has been encouraging and has given the seven drivers a good amount of track time as well as the opportunity to settle into the team and get to know the co-drivers. Now we are all looking forward to Mugello and finally getting back to racing.
