Forty-Three Cars Compete as Support Series for FIA World Endurance Championship

Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America set a record for the most entries at an event in the series’ 12-year history when 43 cars competed in the race weekend at Circuit of The Americas. With that many cars on track, the action was nonstop throughout the two 50-minute races that were part of the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Lone Star Le Mans event.

The championship leaders in three of the four Super Trofeo North America classes changed hands as the result of the races. Giano Taurino and Ernie Francis Jr. grabbed the overall and Pro class win on Saturday with a final-lap pass in the No. 88 TR3 Racing, Lamborghini Miami Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 to push them into the class lead. Danny Formal and Ryan Norman won Race 2 on Sunday in the No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán. They trail Taurino and Francis by just six points with four races remaining on the schedule.

Nate Stacy and Nick Piersing won both ProAm races in the No. 8 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán to move into the class lead by three points. Their teammates, Anthony McIntosh and Glenn McGee in the No. 69 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán, also swept the weekend in the Am class to take that points lead – also by three points.

And in LB Cup. Rodrigo Vales raced to his first Super Trofeo victories, winning both days in the No. 34 TR3 Racing, Lamborghini Miami Huracán. With a pair of podium finishes, Nick Groat (No. 57 One Motorsports, Lamborghini Newport Beach Huracán) extended his class lead to a healthy 27 points.

Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America returns to racing September 20-22 at another renowned racetrack, Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Driver Quotes:

Ernie Francis Jr., No. 88 TR3 Racing, Lamborghini Miami Huracán (Race 1 winner, Pro class): “I’m on top of the world after that one. I was working hard out there. We had a great car all weekend, just didn’t have the qualifying we needed to, so we knew we had to make it happen in the race.” (On his pass for the lead) “I had (Norman) go real far to the inside to try to defend, and he just went to the outside and outbraked himself. I was able to slide on the inside. On the restart for the last lap, I knew I didn’t want to make that same mistake so I didn’t go as far to the inside, kind of parked it in the center. He was able to get a run on me but going around the outside of Turn 2, I wasn’t going to let him have it. … The win was on the line, championship was on the line, had to do what we had to do.”

Ryan Norman, No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán (Race 2 winner, Pro class, after losing the lead on the last lap in Race 1): “You’ve just got to put that stuff behind you and focus on the task at hand today. The way things finished today, the points worked out really well. I was just trying to give Danny a really good car today and he just pulled away, a beautiful drive.”

Danny Formal, No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán (Race 2 winner, Pro class): “Ryan had a tough one yesterday. He’s such a mature driver, he came back today and put on a clinic in his stint. He gave me the car with the best rear tires possible and (I) just went out and give it all for the first five or six laps, we got a nice lead and then we took care of the car.”

Nate Stacy, No. 8 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán (Races 1 and 2 winner, ProAm class): “The car was fantastic! It was set up for the end of the race and it was just on rails. We were (running) in the middle of the Pro pack – I think we were P4 overall – and we were just clicking off laps. The car was so dialed. I can’t thank the guys enough.”

Nick Persing, No. 8 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán (Races 1 and 2 winner, ProAm class): “It’s been a great weekend,” Persing said. “A sweep is something we’ve been looking for since we started this season. … It feels good to be back in the lead of the championship.”

Glenn McGee, No. 69 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán (Races 1 and 2 winner, Am class): “I settled in (after losing the class lead), ran down first place for Am and then I chucked it into the pits as quick as I can and Tony took over. He must have had a massive out lap and then he just drove away from everybody. He did an awesome job.”

Anthony McIntosh, No. 69 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán (Races 1 and 2 winner, Am class): “Once I got in the car, it was pretty simple. The car was well balanced. We had a lot of grip in the corners. I expected it to go away from us but it kept coming toward us. The car was set up to really go the distance and it went the distance.”

Rodrigo Vales, No. 34 TR3 Racing, Lamborghini Miami Huracán (Races 1 and 2 winner, LB Cup class): “Great weekend, yes. We tried to do our best. We did a good pit, we stopped correctly and everything went fine, so we won. I didn’t know (that I could win twice). It was a great surprise.”
