The Virginia International Raceway (widely known as “VIR”) is a track in Alton, Virginia. It is located by the banks of the Dan River, near the border with North Carolina. No fewer than five configurations are possible, including two that can be used at the same time. The track was opened in 1957 and in its early years it hosted the most prestigious championships in the USA. It was subsequently closed for a long period before being relaunched in the late 1990s as America’s first “Motorsport Resort”, offering a combination of a challenging technical track and first-rate hospitality.
