Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia prepares for China Challenge

All titles wide open ahead of final season encounter on Asian soil

Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia (LSTA) arrives in China at the Shanghai International Circuit for its final encounter on home soil in 2024 from September 13-15, before it heads to Europe for the season-closing double header and World Finals. After eight races in four countries across Asia Pacific, the PRO, PRO-AM, AM and Lamborghini Cup titles all remain wide open, ensuring the two 50-minute races on the 5.451 km FIA Grade 1 Shanghai track promise to be nothing short of spectacular.

Two teams are tied on points at the top of the PRO leaderboard with DW Evans GT’s Dan Wells and 25-year-old Lamborghini Super Trofeo Junior Emilien Carde of France taking the number one spot courtesy of their two wins in Australia and Japan. Also on 86 points are the SJM Iron Lynx Theodore Racing pair of fellow Junior Charles Leong of Macau, and former W Series driver Miki Koyama of Japan. Only absent from the PRO podium on one occasion so far this season, the pair have yet to take a win despite showing impressive consistency in the Lamborghini Nagoya Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2.

However, the contest for the PRO title is far from a two-horse race as the formidable Arrows Racing duo of third Lamborghini Super Trofeo Junior Gavin Huang and Jonathan Cecotto lie just 16 points behind the two leaders. They arrive in China resolved to bounce back from an unlucky second race in Fuji last month, their only non-points scoring outing of the season.

Returning to the PRO ranks in Shanghai is Peter Li Zhicong with Black Jack Racing. Li contested the opening rounds of the season in Malaysia, taking an impressive fourth overall finish in race one.

Competition for the PRO-AM crown is equally intense. Twenty-nine points separate the three contenders, and with a maximum of 62 points on offer before the season end, the title remains very much up for grabs.

Wells and Carde’s team mates Thomas Yu Lee and Nikolas Pirttilahti top the PRO-AM leaderboard in the second DW Evans GT Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 on 96 points heading to Shanghai. However, title rivals Chen Fangping and André Couto trail them by just six points with four races remaining. After taking five class wins in six races, the pair’s absence in Fuji saw them drop to second in the standings.

Third in the PRO-AM standings are exciting Malaysian talents Selim Rafique and former FIA World Endurance Championship LMP2 star Jazeman Jaafar. Like their Madness Racing Team rivals, Rafique and Jaafar have contested six of the eight races thus far. Kamlung Racing’s Kenneth Lau and Bertram Lau, who joined the series in Fuji last month, return for the Shanghai double-header.

While the PRO and PRO-AM title battles are guaranteed to once again provide plenty of thrills, a remarkable 11 drivers remain in mathematical contention for the AM championship, and all will be out on track in the upcoming Shanghai showdown promising a truly memorable weekend.

Leading the way is remarkable Korean privateer Brian Lee Changwon who has so far taken five class wins driving solo in his SQDA-GRIT Motorsport Lamborghini to earn him 105 points thus far. However, a mere five points behind are standout LSTA newcomers Nattanid ‘Kat’ Leewattanavalagul and fellow Thai Dechathorn ‘Phu’ Phuakkarawut at YK Motorsports by Star Performance and driving the Lamborghini Bangkok car.

610Racing by Absolute’s Li Xuanyu and Xie Wenjun and Madness Racing Team’s Stephen Hong Shijie and He Xinyang lie 38 and 48 points off the top of the AM leaderboard respectively. Meanwhile, popular LSTA regular Suttiluck Buncharoen in the True Visions Motorsports Thailand entry, Arrow’s Racing’s Johnson Huang, and Vortex Racegraph’s Luo Haowen and Song Jiajun still have everything to race for. Huang again reunites with regular team mate Vincent Tai for Shanghai.

The 2024 Lamborghini Cup honours will be decided between this season’s standouts Hairie and Haziq Oh, the brothers racing their HZO Fortis Racing Team by Absolute Racing Lamborghini to seven class wins in eight races. But right on the heels of the Malaysian duo throughout the season has been Siamgas Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong. Never off the AM podium, Supachai trails the Oh brothers by only 22 points.

Joining them in China is the two-car Arrows Racing entry of Dr. Ma and Samson Chan, both driving solo.

The weekend at the Hermann Tilke-designed home of the Chinese F1 Grand Prix gets underway with two, on-hour free practice sessions on Friday, September 13. The two 15-minute qualifying to set the grids for each race begin at 11:00 the following day, with race on starting at 15:55. The final Asian race of the 2024 LSTA season starts at 14:00 on Sunday (all times UTC+8).
