Lamborghini’s Award-Winning Factory of the Future

1 août 2018

Lamborghini was awarded the Gold Winner title of the prestigious SAP Quality Awards in the Business Transformation category for having excelled in the implementation of production and quality principles thanks to a groundbreaking project called MES, Manufacturing Execution System.

With Urus, Lamborghini made the impossible possible. Not only was the first Super Sport Utility Vehicle created, but the production site was doubled in size from 80,000 to 160,000 m2, an expansion carried out in record time at full production capacity. Moreover, the new Factory 4.0 assembly line, dedicated entirely to the Urus Super SUV, integrates new production technologies to support workers in assembly and maintenance activities, one of these being the MES.

This integrated production management system makes it possible to organise the quality of the product and the related process up to its maintenance. Luca Pirrè and Nicola Pasquali, Manufacturing Engineering and Systems Planning and IT Process Management, respectively, explain how this system responds to three different needs: “The first is the quality of production; that is, the ability to respond to the need to digitize the document that contains the history of the car, a diary that collects all the operations carried out during assembly and that facilitates the identification of possible non-conformities. The second is production control and monitoring; that is, the traceability of the production processes and the real-time availability of information for the correct progress of the car, so that the working status is available and consultable from any device connected to the MES. No less important is the integrated management of the production cycle that controls the activation of technologies in the individual stations and provides the possibility to allocate the cars to a different point of the process. The last advantage of the MES is the possibility for monitoring and maintenance of the production machinery, involving constant real-time observation of the efficiency of the systems along with the ability to promptly alert the maintenance staff in the event of a malfunction or for scheduled maintenance.”
